The Potty Process

Yes, I know, I seem to discuss this almost every week.  (It actually’s been a whole week since I dedicated an entry to this.)  Obviously, where it comes to what we’re doing with the Monster, this is the biggest part of how we’re trying to get him ‘ready for school and life’ at the moment.

So the potty process is still going strong while we’re trying to get him trained.  Granted, we don’t know how hard this is for most parents, since we’ve never had to deal with this ourselves, but… I’m not much for worrying about that kind of thing. Continue reading

Slow and Steady

So this weekend was quieter than most of the recent ones, as I’ve made reference to before.  We didn’t have anywhere exciting to be, but rather were largely around the house when we weren’t at synagogue.

For the most part, this meant that we also didn’t have major meltdowns, aside from the one at shul when I decided it wasn’t the right time for the Monster to be running around like a crazy person.  (I’d have been content to let him run around, save that he was running into the main sanctuary, where the microphones were likely still on.) Another Poop Entry

Part of the Monster’s IEP is toilet training.

Now, I know that a lot of you are saying, “C’mon, I had to toilet train my kids.  Why are you able to get the school to help you?”  (You wouldn’t be alone – apparently, even according to his teacher, the para-professional in his class has said exactly the same thing.) Continue reading

More Carrot Than Stick

Yes, another post about the potty.

For those who are following my tweet feed (@DadEnoughBlog), I was mentioning over the weekend that we managed to get the Monster to use the toilet a few times.  We’re up to thrice this weekend, including one where we think he indicated that he had to go and another where he clearly asked to go. P..P..Progress…

Just goes to show that sometimes, when I prepare a posting in advance (shock of shocks – I actually wrote ahead for once), something else jumps out of the queue to deserve publication first.  I’ll also circle back to yesterday’s Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee meeting in a few days, after I’ve had time to collect my thoughts on it.

So last night, the wife went to a concert with her sister, leaving me with the kids.  I’d decided to take them out to dinner, arrived at the restaurant to find they were both asleep, and so I came back home.  This resulted in the Monster going to bed without dinner (I couldn’t rouse him sufficiently to eat), and with a dry diaper. Make It So, Number One

There comes a point in every child’s life that there has to be a drastic change made to the daily procedure.  It usually involves that point where parents are getting majorly frayed and tired of the status quo, and where it’s time for the child to start taking more responsibility for themselves.

No, I’m not talking college graduation and moving out into the world, or even high school graduation and getting ready for college.  I’m talking toilet training. Continue reading
