Slow and Steady

So this weekend was quieter than most of the recent ones, as I’ve made reference to before.  We didn’t have anywhere exciting to be, but rather were largely around the house when we weren’t at synagogue.

For the most part, this meant that we also didn’t have major meltdowns, aside from the one at shul when I decided it wasn’t the right time for the Monster to be running around like a crazy person.  (I’d have been content to let him run around, save that he was running into the main sanctuary, where the microphones were likely still on.) Monkey See…

So, the latest change around the house is that the Monster’s doing a lot more imitating lately.

We’ve always read to him – it’s one of those things that one hears is “what you’re supposed to do” to ensure your kids get an early start on things.  And certainly, he’s got a very good head start, since he knows all his letters and numbers. Continue reading

Another Poop Entry

Part of the Monster’s IEP is toilet training.

Now, I know that a lot of you are saying, “C’mon, I had to toilet train my kids.  Why are you able to get the school to help you?”  (You wouldn’t be alone – apparently, even according to his teacher, the para-professional in his class has said exactly the same thing.) Continue reading

Off to Shul We Go

Sorry for not being around for a few days.  We ended up going (without much forethought) to the Renaissance Festival on Sunday – I’ll write about that in a day or two – and then we ran smack into Rosh Hashanah.

And I’m going to dive right into my topic of the day – we didn’t take the Monster to services for Rosh Hashanah, and I’m perfectly fine with that decision. Continue reading

Back to School

So last night was the back to school night for the Monster.

I have to admit that I wasn’t ready for this quite yet – I’d figured that we had at least a year, maybe two, before we’d be doing this… but there we were, sitting in the gym of an elementary/middle school listening to the principal and whatnot.  And it felt about as weird as we expected. Going Out

I’ll save any further issues I’m having with the busses for another post.  (I’m still waiting on word from the school district.)

No, sometimes, as I’ve said before, it’s about us.  Autism doesn’t just really affect the person who has it, but the entire family around them. Continue reading

RTFM

This is the third week of the Monster’s public schooling.

The bussing issue seems to be resolved for the time being – we haven’t had any repeats of the obscenely long bus-rides AM or PM.  (I do know the bus was late, by 5 minutes, one morning this week to the school, but that’s not bad considering they were 20 minutes late here.)  I’m “content” that this has been resolved, or that I can start turning the screws again to get it fixed.
