Keeping Them Occupied

Every so often, I work from home during the day to give the wife a break from watching both kids.

Now, I know, obviously I’m a software engineer and I therefore am not “that busy”, since I’m somewhat settled in a single spot while I’m working.  And more so since I was recently promoted to being the software development manager for my team. Continue reading

Personae Non Gratae

I’ve written in the past – most notably, in reaction to a comment I made elsewhere that seemed to evoke a lot of conflict – about how it irks me when the Monster (and other children with special needs) are excluded from events with other children their own age, including classmates’ birthday parties, seemingly just on the basis of their disabilities.

It’s not just the Monster, though – it’s the parents too. Continue reading

The Cheering Section

Normal families have Super Bowl parties.

We’re more fortunate than a lot of families that are dealing with an ASD, in that the Monster really is not sensory adverse.  We’ve taken him to plenty of places – amusement parks, fireworks displays, bowling alleys and the like – where other children with Autism have trouble coping with all of the sensory overload. In Public View

Here in Baltimore, the schools are closed for three days this week – yesterday because of Martin L. King Jr Day, today and tomorrow for “professional service”.  Since the wife and the baby have their ‘mommy and me’ class on Mondays, I took the Monster around with me, then out to the JCC to pick up the baby so the wife could have personal time. But, after the bonspiel was over, I headed back to hook up with the family again and to head out to dinner with my wife and the kids. Continue reading

Off to Shul We Go

Sorry for not being around for a few days.  We ended up going (without much forethought) to the Renaissance Festival on Sunday – I’ll write about that in a day or two – and then we ran smack into Rosh Hashanah.

And I’m going to dive right into my topic of the day – we didn’t take the Monster to services for Rosh Hashanah, and I’m perfectly fine with that decision. Continue reading

Back to School

So last night was the back to school night for the Monster.

I have to admit that I wasn’t ready for this quite yet – I’d figured that we had at least a year, maybe two, before we’d be doing this… but there we were, sitting in the gym of an elementary/middle school listening to the principal and whatnot.  And it felt about as weird as we expected.
