The Big Switch

We’re about a week out from school now, and that means getting the Monster’s list of supplies together before he gets into the classroom.  Most of the items are the run-of-the-mill stuff you’d see for any kid going into kindergarten – crayons, glue sticks, paper towels, things like that.

One of the things that’s not on his list this year are pull-ups.

By the end of last school year, his teachers had worked down to cloth underwear only in the classroom – he wasn’t always avoiding accidents, but he was getting through most school days without having them.  Likewise, camp’s been hit-or-miss, but more hit than miss…

But obviously, we’ve been still resorting to pull-ups when we’re going to be out of the house for extended periods.  (And that’s obviously excluding the pool for the moment, due to health concerns.)  It’s really just easier for us, and it’s the best way we’ve found to ensure that we don’t have major problems… and it’s probably not good for him in the long run.

So we basically came to the “suck it up” discussion in the last week, and have decided we’re going to make the big switch, finally.  Except for while he’s sleeping and in the pool, the Monster’s going to be in his cloth underwear.

Granted, this means having to schlep additional stuff with us beyond what we’d had before – just as a safety measure.  If this works, though, and he catches on to tell us about needing the bathroom with enough warning to do something about it, it’s a huge step forward for him.
